Hi all,

Kramer has alerted me to a new form of ambulance chasing out there, i.e. suing internet forum owners for copyright infringement:

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/07/copyright-trolling-for-dollars/

As I am not anxious to be victimized by this, I am asking all of you to post only small snippets of articles you link to, no more than 50% or so, as well as providing the link to the story.

If you forget to do this, I will delete all but a few sentences of your article so as to keep us out of trouble. Thanks for your cooperation.

I thought that this was always the rule.

The netiquette is to supply the link, include a snippet in quotes and then comment on why this particular link is worth reading.

Let's face it, what interests some poster is of no interest to others.

It has always been the rule, but now there are active ambulance chasers out there.

I can recall way back when, when intercst had a forum, it was shut down for this reason (I think by MSN). Nowadays, he could also have been sued.

The liability is not wide open like a doctor or driver faces on a daily basis, but for someone kind enough to run a forum we should take steps to avoid these sorts of problems for them. And presumably the real identity of any poster is just a subpoena away.

Yeah, I'm thinking that we all have liability here. Me for owning the forum and members who break the copyright rules. This whole thing spooks me a bit. I did have a WSJ writer ask me to take down one article quoted in full by one of our members a few months which of course I removed immediately. I guess I should have realized that lawyers would leech onto this process at some point.

The good news is that they're raising your hit count...

It is amazing how many hits I get when searching for a specific article by quoting the opening sentence. There are 1000s of blogs that replicate stuff verbatim. Sometimes it is stuff that has been flagged as urban legend too.
